Day 1: Asheville, North Carolina

If you follow me on social media and read my blog, you know that I have embarked on an 11-day travel adventure, a final travel push before I return to my community college teaching job.

I spent my first day in my hometown of Asheville, a small city that I love even more each time I come here. This visit was no exception. It amazes me how alive the downtown is. The streets, Pritchard Park, restaurants, and bars were overflowing with people and music from various outdoor and indoor performances.

My first stop was to meet high school friends, a former student, and her friend at Jack of the Wood Public House.  Jack is like an old friend, a cozy Celtic-style pub, and the original home of Green Man Brewery. Jack still serves Green Man’s brews on tap as well as other microbrews.  It also serves up some good and hearty pub-style food, like fish and chips, fish tacos, burgers, etc. This evening I opted for Green Man IPA (6% ABV), two pints in fact, fish tacos, and an order of fried pickles to share with the group. I must say that the fried pickles were as amazing as they were sinful. I was quite impressed with casual, friendly atmosphere, as well as the quantity and quality of the brew and the food. I would definitely return to visit Jack again.

After Jack, we headed over to heaven, aka French Broad Chocolate Lounge. If you can eat it or drink it, you can make it with chocolate or add chocolate to it. Sheer decadence: homemade artisan chocolates, chocolate desserts, hot and cold chocolate drinks, even a Green Man Porter float with chocolate. Yup, you guessed it. I went for it, the Mud Wrestler: Green Man Porter with vanilla ice cream, a shot of espresso, and chocolate sauce. Lesson learned: Mix up all of the ingredients first, then take a sip of that smooth and creamy combination of brew, coffee, and chocolate. It was like nothing I have ever had in my life. I went all the way and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Now that’s living.
