I apologize for not posting this sooner, but this trip was flawless except for two issues:

–On October 9, I was scheduled to fly TRI-CVG-LGA. Delta contacted me and let me know that I was going to misconnect and offered me an involuntary reroute through ATL. Well, it ended up that my original flight was NOT delayed, but the flight they rerouted me on WAS delayed. I misconnected in ATL and was backed up on the last flight out of ATL. I barely made that last connection due to the delay, and I lost the upgrade on the flight I missed. I was stuck sitting in 31A window. The flight did have Gogo Inflight Internet, so I managed to surf the Internet for the duration of that flight. There was no in-flight service from TRI-ATL and the standard coach snack and beverage service was offered from ATL-LGA. That flight arrived on time.

–On my return from LGA-ATL, I was upgraded and enjoyed continental breakfast and the standard beverage and snack basket service. On the flight from ATL-TRI, we were delayed due to a computer glitch that prevented an accurate weight and balance reading, so the pilots ended up having to do it the old-fashioned way, with “pen and paper,” they announced. There was no in-flight service and we landed about 30-40 minutes late without incident.

Today I checked my Delta SkyMiles account and noticed that I had been proactively awarded 2500 “Customer Relations Bonus Miles” on October 13. I assume that was due to the involuntary reroute.

The flights home were pleasantly uneventful. I arrived the airport in time to pass through security and visit the Sky Club in LaGuardia before boarding my flight. We boarded on time, pushed back on time, and departed around 11:30 am. I was upgraded, so my flight service included beverages and lunch, a choice of a Greek-style salad with grilled chicken or a turkey sandwich. There was no Gogo Inflight Internet on this plane, so I spent my time reading instead of watching the television short programming on the overhead monitors. We landed in Atlanta early and I had time again to visit the C37 Sky Club for a quick beverage and computer time.

The second flight boarded and departed on time as well, again with just a short wait to take off. There was no in-flight service due to the “short duration,” but the flight attendant offered to serve us on an as-needed basis. Again, we arrived early at TRI.

My impression is that Delta has greatly improved their product and service in the last year, despite the merger with Northwest and related, but expected, glitches. I hope the improvement continues as Delta is my carrier of choice from TRI.

The first flight from TRI-ATL was fairly uneventful as usual. We departed about 25 minutes late and still landed early, but our gate was still occupied, so we had to wait. The flight attendant announced there would be no beverage service due to the “short duration,” but did pass through the cabin offering coffee or water. Our delay was due to a late-arriving inbound aircraft and our flight was full due to a previous cancellation. I offered to take a bump to a later flight, but when the agents looked at my itinerary, they decided it was in my best interest to stay on my original flights.

I had time to visit the A17 Sky Club for about 20 minutes in between flights, where I enjoyed mixed nuts, olives, and an Atlanta Sweetwater brew.

When I arrived my departure gate, boarding had already started and I missed the upgrade by one. However, seat 19D has more legroom than first class, but has a narrower seat due to the tray table in the armrest.

We departed on time and were airborne within 15 minutes of gate departure. The in-flight service consisted of complimentary snacks and snacks/snack boxes for sale. I purchased one of the snack boxes to see what it contained and I must say I was impressed: pita chips, hummus, a mini Toblerone, a small chocolate chip granola-type bar, dried apricots, almonds, a wet nap, and mini Delta playing cards! I also took advantage of the Gogo Inflight Internet, so the time passed quickly. I also enjoyed talking to the flight attendant who was seated facing me at the exit. We landed 23 minutes early at LGA.

With a 4:10 pm departure, I boarded the Clinton Green line at 2:00 pm. This was a mistake. I thought it would take an hour to get out to ORD. Instead, it took 90 minutes and I spent the last 20 minutes biting my nails. It was a stupid miscalculation, but I blame a week of back-to-back 12 hour days and a mediocre hotel too far from the client’s office for my lack of proper brain function. The Chicago Metra is otherwise pretty good for reaching O’Hare (and I am told also MDW) with a dedicated stop at the end of the Blue line (which goes right in to the downtown Loop). When your reach the airport, there are clear signs and departure/arrival displays that point to underground tunnels and moving sidewalks to take you to the appropriate terminal. Chicago is bidding to host the 2016 Olympics as advertised on signs throughout the city and annoying announcements in the airport. I say “good luck” as there is no way these system could take that kind of peak load.

So I arrived at the top of the TSA queue at 3:30 pm with a 4:10 pm departure. A long and poorly executed line for the five X-ray scanners, I picked the line that suddenly was “bag check” after “bag check”, not that it mattered, as I again didn’t take my liquids and gels out of my rollaboard and it was not captured. E13 is the furthest away from the main concourse, so I was fast walking it and arrived just as the inbound pax were being deplaned. ORD does not have any passenger assist slidewalks in the terminal, which is a sign of this airport’s age. NW turned the plane around incredibly quickly and we still achieved an on time departure. All the signage in O’Hare is still NW, inside and out.

My seat was 14A (the more forward of the two exit rows) on this NW painted DC9-50, which is AB on the left and DEF on the right. My seatmate was a similarly large-sized adult, so we were sharing personal space for the 50 minute flight to Detroit. No beverage service in Y.

We arrived in Detroit 4 minutes late (despite what Flightstats says was 15 minutes early) at gate A4 after a long taxi around the perimeter. A4 is at the tip of the terminal. Idiot that I am, I accepted a 35 minute layover and had to fast walk 3/4ths of DTW’s main terminal, taking a moving sidewalk to the tram and then two moving sidewalks to A57, where I arrived out of breath as the main cabin was being boarded. If this had involved a terminal change, I’d have missed the flight. My rollaboard ended up above row 9, while I took my seat 1D in, again, a DC9-50. There was a blanket, pillow and mini-Dasani at each seat, and while pre-departure drinks were not served, the flight attendants did pick up jackets for hanging.

A ten-minute taxi and we took off into the sunset. The drink carts were deployed and I enjoyed a Mile High Mojito, that was hand shaken in the aisle and poured into a real glass. I watched it being prepared – what a hassle for the flight attendant, who has to open two different mini-bottles plus a can! I did tell her that it was “Perfect.” The fully-loaded snack basket was brought around a few minutes later with a good selection of Sun Chips, candy bars, Fishers peanuts and Biscoffs.

Landing at CLT was well after sunset on 18C and we pulled in to gate A7. There was only a cleaning crew in the A terminal. Surprising for 9:00 PM arrival, the food concessions in the B/C area were crowded with people waiting in line and sitting at tables eating. I only saw about 35 or so more departures scheduled on the boards, so I don’t quite know what these people were doing. The arrivals pick-up area was pretty quiet and I was able to get a taxi within a minute or two.

Summary: I get a new line on my @flightmemory map for ORD-DTW. I was at least upgraded one final time for one segment as CO departs SkyTeam. I’m still not a fan of the DC9/MD-90 aircraft model for narrow seats though the forward of the two exit rows is quite leggy. Clean aircraft, competent crews and a great drink. An A for Northwest.

Typically I write separate reports for each segment of a trip, but this time I found myself flying all Delta Connection flights and I decided to give my readers an overview of what to expect on Delta Connection flights. And if anyone has not flown Delta or Delta Connection lately due to a previous negative experience, I suggest you give them a try again. Delta/Delta Connection has become amazingly consistent, and you would never know that the airline is in the middle of a merger with Northwest.

If flying coach, you will receive a beverage and snack service on most flights. Of my three flights in coach, I received the same service on two of the three: a full beverage service and a choice of complimentary Biscoffs (cookies), peanuts, or pretzels. The only flight that did not offer service was my flight from CVG to TRI today.

When flying first class on a short Delta Connection flight, such as my flight between LGA and CVG, one receives a pre-departure beverage service, 0ne or two in-flight beverage services with glassware, and the Delta snack basket. Today’s snack basket contained Biscoffs, peanuts, pretzels, pretzel crisps, Twix, apples, and bananas. On my flight, there were two flight attendants. One served first class, then she and the other flight attendant served coach together. I must comment my first class flight attendant, Whitney. She recognized me from my Friday night flight to LGA, as the same crew worked that flight, and on this flight, she both worked coach and offered first class two full beverage and snack services. She did not take a break. Kudos to Whitney!

With regard to the operation of my flights, three of my flights arrived very early (25, 25, and 20 minutes early) and my flight from CVG-LGA arrived 19 minutes late. Given the weather in the NYC area on Friday night, I must count my blessings that I was not very late!

I’m way behind on my trip write-ups and may skip a few but I did want to mention my flight from Cleveland back to London last Sunday. As you may know, Cleveland-LHR is a seasonal flight and is CLE’s only transatlantic flight (since CDG was canceled after last year) and I must say these guys really take pride in this one flight.

On arrival at the airport I did not see their BusinessFirst special counter at the end of the check-in area so I went to the regular EliteAccess line to print my boarding pass. Once the agent went to check my bags and saw I was flying in BusinessFirst on the direct flight to London she went out of her way to be friendly even telling me to make sure I say hello to the concierge (calling her by name) who would be hanging out in the President’s Club until the flight. Security was a bit slow but wasn’t too bad and before long I was through security at the C terminal at CLE. CLE is a bit of a disaster area right now as they rebuild the shopping areas, and as a result there’s not much of anything open except a few random restaurants and basically no shops. I decided I would spend my time in the President’s Club while waiting to board. Upon arrival the agent at the door again mentioned to make sure I stop by to say hello to the concierge. So I walked in, had a beer, and then strolled over to say hello. The concierge was quite friendly, offered to provide any assistance I may need, checked my boarding pass/passport and wished me a good flight. I went to the bar for a few more beverages and before long we were boarding the full flight to LHR.

Boarding was in the middle door, so I made a quick left turn to reach my seat, 1A (someone had grabbed 1B before I could get to it!) I was greeted by name by the flight attendants working the section and offered a drink. I settled down with a glass of champagne and paged through a few magazines while waiting to board. The International Service Manager then stopped by with the amenity kits and menus and also introduced himself. Flight time was also scheduled to be about 45 minutes shorter than on the books, so we were due for a nice early arrival into LHR. I ordered the steak as it was the best of the options (I think I’ve been through their meal rotations several times over the past 2 1/2 years of flying them!) Before long we were heading out for the short taxi and early departure.

Once in the air the cabin crew wasted no time preparing dinner service. Warm nuts and drinks were offered (Bordeaux for me) followed by the standard app cart (veggie wonton pocket type thing, crab cake, and some soup) with loads of bread, and then the salad. My steak was served soon after the salad and was cooked a bit on the well side but still edible. I think she came around with bread and wine refills every 5 minutes, it was great service! Dessert was standard cheese cart and ice cream. I went for the ice cream and had some peppermint tea before trying to grab some shut eye. Overall the dinner service was very efficient- taking less than 2 hours from take-off. This is one of my pet peeves with night flights as often times the dinner service almost takes 3 hours so this was a welcome relief.

I had decided to watch Wolverine so I finished that film and tried (unsuccessfully) to get some sleep. The recliner seats are great for day flights but I find the foot rest doesn’t quite go up enough to allow me to sleep well. I did have my eyes shut for a few hours, but I wouldn’t call it sleep. The crew waited until about 1 hr prior to landing to serve breakfast which I think was very welcome by the entire plane. This is typically another pet peeve as often times they start with ~2 hours left of flying time (if you add in the 3-hour meal, that means there’s only about 2 hours between meals!) I had a cinnamon roll and some coffee. We only had to circle a few times over south London before finally landing at LHR 45 min early. On landing we also disembarked from the middle doors. And for the first time ever on a CO flight, the flight attendants actually let BusinessElite out first thanking us all personally on our way out. Immigration had quite the queue, but I used the IRIS (eye-scanning machines) to skip the queue and proceed to wait 35 minutes for my bags. That’s another downside with the 757s- -they don’t use the bins for the bags so they take longer to unload. I met my driver right at the time my flight was scheduled to land so it was not a big deal as I still got in early.

Overall this was one of my favorite flights in a long time. It’s obvious the CLE station takes great pride in this seasonal flight and it showed. Everyone from the check-in agent to the club agent to the concierge to the gate agents to the CLE based crew were amazingly friendly. The best part came 2 days ago when I received in the mail a handwritten letter from the concierge thanking me for flying. In about 16 round trips on CO this is the first time I got a letter. Needless to say I was very impressed. We all know that it’s the little things that set airlines apart and in this instance CO came through with several of them.

This is a very short trip report, because Delta can’t be any more predictable and reliable. My travel life just isn’t exciting anymore since I’ve stopped having Beth Effects and voucher redemption issues!

The first flight boarded and pushed back on time. We were served a pre-departure beverage in first class. We did wait in line for about 50 minutes to take off and were airborne at 10:45 am, but we still landed two minutes early at 12:31 pm. Padding rocks! In-flight services included Gogo Inflight Internet, Delta TV shorts on the overhead monitors, hot towels, beverages, and lunch. I had the chef salad.

I had time for a 15-minute stop at the Sky Club to recharge my BlackBerry for a few minutes and go to the very clean and nice ladies’ room!

The second flight boarded quickly, we pushed back EARLY at 1:19 pm and shockingly, we were airborne by 1:26 pm. That made for an early landing at 2:08 pm. There was a beverage service by request only.

Lather, rinse, repeat. I have no complaints at all with Delta after flying 41 flights this year, so I really have trouble understanding why they’re not more popular with frequent fliers. The product has improved and the service is consistent, reliable, and predictable.

The first flight was very uneventful. We did depart late due to our late inbound aircraft, but in the big picture, it was negligible. We took off at 4:49 pm and landed at 5:36 pm. The beverage service was by request only and the flight attendant actually received quite a few requests. I had seat 8B exit aisle with a seatmate, but moved to 7C aisle with no seatmate shortly after takeoff.

After deplaning, I had time for about 20 minutes in the Sky Club, where I enjoyed the spread of olives, packaged cheese, and an Atlanta Sweetwater beer.

I arrived at the gate and boarding had already started. There was a representative from Gogo Inflight Internet handing out trial passes to try out the service. We boarded quickly and backed away from the gate close to on time. We had a typical ATL runway wait, and took off at 7:05 pm. This flight had Delta TV shorts via ceiling monitors and Gogo Inflight Internet. I had a code for a free session that expired 8/16, so I used it, instead of the card I received from the representative. The speed was great and it really made the trip pass quickly. The in-flight meal was a choice of a sandwich platter or grilled chicken on pasta. I chose the chicken. Below is the photo. We arrived at LGA 8:50 pm. Again, another uneventful and pleasant flight.

I will take the time to give kudos to TripIt Pro, http://www.tripit.com. I have an account and I upload my trips by forwarding my booking confirmations to plans@tripit.com. I completed a 30-day trial for the pro version and decided to keep it for an annual subscription of $49.00 per year, which includes automatic flight/trip updates and alerts. Below are the alerts I received yesterday, in reverse order:

DL5091 arr gate C43. 56m until dep DL1792 6:40pm term S, gate B34. 19 hours ago

I no longer have to manually enter flight alerts at websites that offer that service! To me that is a lifesaver, because I have to enter alerts for my clients and this reduces my load!

I arrived SFO around 11:30 am and checked in with the first class/elite agent, since I had a bag and wine to check. And wow, she was not very pleasant. She asked me twice if I was first/elite, as if she did not believe me. I gave her my flight information and passport and she claimed she could not find me on the flight, so I had to give her my confirmation code. Then she rolled her eyes and grumbled about me checking a wine shipper box and having to tag it fragile, although Delta accepts correctly packed special and fragile items at the customer’s own risk. After that unpleasantness was over, I went to the Sky Club outside of security to connect quickly to the Internet. I logged into T-Mobile with my SkyMiles number but the network kept booting me off and redirecting me to the regular T-Mobile login page, although the small login window said I was logged in. That was very frustrating. I gave up after a couple of tries of reconnecting, as I didn’t have much time. I proceeded to the first/elite security line, where I was subjected to a random pat down for no apparent reason, as my computer bag was not searched at all.

Boarding began with specials and passengers w/strollers/young children, then first class via the Breezeway, and then by zone. In first class, we received a full pre-departure beverage service, pillow, blanket, and mini Dasani. We finally departed at 1:31 pm, 41 minutes past scheduled departure. Shortly thereafter, the flight attendant took meal orders. The choices were a reuben sandwich or a green salad w/grilled chicken. The hot towel, beverage, and meal service followed in that order. The salad consisted of grilled chicken, romaine lettuce, cucumber, onion, tomato, olives, feta, red and yellow pepper, and olive oil balsamic vinaigrette dressing. The sides were pre-packaged breadsticks, fresh fruit, and a pre-packaged molasses cookie. For entertainment, I watched “Frasier,” the episode about when Frasier loses the wine club corkmaster election to Niles twice, resigns from the club, then tries his hand at hosting a new radio show, “The Wine Corner,” just to spite Niles. Hilarious! Then I watched “Friends” (The One with the Engagement Picture). After that, I watched an episode of “Law & Order: SVU” that somehow I’d never seen. The flight attendants offered a snack basket and beverage service about and hour and a half before landing. I wrote this trip report and listened to “Sting & The Police: The Best Of…”CD available on the in-flight entertainment system. We landed at Atlanta at 8:31 pm, seven minutes before scheduled arrival.

Upon arriving to Atlanta, I proceeded from the T gates to concourse D for my connection. I stopped at a recharging station to charge my BlackBerry and made phone calls. I made my way to the gate just in time for boarding by zone numbers. We loaded up and were ready to depart, but we took a “volume” delay getting to the runway and waiting in line to take off. We finally were airborne at 10:35 pm, 45 minutes past scheduled departure. Although the flight attendant said no beverage service was supposed to be scheduled, she served snacks and ice water due to the delay. We landed at 11:13 pm, only 15 minutes past scheduled arrival.

Actual 5:16 pm -6:46 pm

The first flight was fairly uneventful except for the fact that it was delayed. The weather was awful at TRI, high winds and pouring rain, so I assume that the inclement weather played a role in the delay. The inbound aircraft arrived late, around 12:50 pm. Deplaning and aircraft turnaround was rather quick all things considered. However, for some reason, TRI only had ONE gate agent and ONE baggage handler for three flights, our flight to CVG, one to ATL, and a NW Airlink flight to either MEM or DTW, so it caused additional delay. The ATL flight, then the NW flight, then our flight boarded, in that order. And it was “all aboard,” no Breezeway or zone boarding. I felt badly for the lone baggage handler, who kept running between checked luggage and valet. I actually patted him on the shoulder and said, “It’s tough having to do it all, isn’t it?” and he shook his head yes. We pushed back fairly quickly and were airborne by 1:23 pm, 53 minutes late. There was no service in flight “due to the short duration” and we landed at 1:59 pm, only 36 minutes in flight and only 26 minutes late.

I spent my next two and a half hours in the Concourse B Delta Sky Club. I have to say that I enjoyed my complimentary Internet and the peace and quiet, but the beverages left a lot to be desired. I first tried a Bloody Mary. Apparently there was no Mr. & Mrs.’s T’s Bloody Mary mix, because it was made with plain tomato juice and lime and I had to “doctor” it myself with the provided salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and Tabasco. I much prefer the mix. So for my next drink, I asked if he could make a margarita, hoping for the Rande Gerber Signature version found aboard Delta flights. Again I was disappointed, as the mix was not that and was not good. One nice touch was the offering of mixed nuts, in addition to the standard Biscoffs, pretzels, dried fruit, and Nutella. As I was leaving, the club had put out the evening fare that I love so much: chicken salad, hummus, cheese and crackers, and olives. I confess I took a few olives and ate them quickly before leaving!

Around 4:20 pm, I proceeded to the gate and as I walked up, the gate agent called first class to board. Perfect timing! In my seat were the standard pillow, blanket, and mini Dasani. The flight attendant offered a full pre-departure beverage service. I had a glass, not a plastic cup, of white wine, the Fetzer Sauvignon Blanc, which after having a few times on Delta, is a pretty “uneventful,” bland offering, but otherwise harmless.

We were ready to push back on time, but the pilot announced that we were going to wait a few minutes on a group of passengers that were coming through customs. Honestly, if I were one of those customers, I would be eternally grateful to Delta for holding my flight. We pushed back only about 12 minutes late at 5:02 pm and were airborne by 5:16 pm.

About 30 minutes in flight, the flight attendant offered dinner service, which consisted of hot towel service, drinks in glassware, and dinner. I was sort of shocked, because the dinner offerings were the same as I had back in March 2009, the short ribs or penne pasta with red sauce. I would have thought Delta would have changed the menu by now, five months later, but I guess times are tough all over!

The meal was served on different dinnerware than before, but the meal was essentially the same, a nice-sized portion of very tender, no knife needed, beef rib; salad, grilled squash, mashed potatoes, and a very rich, chocolate mousse-like dessert, similar in texture to cheesecake. My seatmate, a wine geek turned businessman, and I opted for the “safe” Fetzer as the beverage, but wow, it did not taste very good with the meal! So we inquired about the red offering, which was a 2008 Copperfish Shiraz from “Central Baja,” whatever that means! We assumed it would not be very good. It was slightly better with the food than the Fetzer. To be honest, it tasted better after the rich, sweet dessert. I suggested to him that we needed to move away from the wine and on to the Rande Gerber Signature Margarita, with a soda water and lime in between as a break!

The flight did not have Gogo Inflight Internet, but it did have Dish Satellite TV and On Demand movies and music. I watched some of WNBC NY local news and NBC Nightly News. While writing this trip report, I opted to listen to Delta’s On Demand music offerings. My seatmate tried to listen to the standard music channels, but the system kept resetting to Channel 1, so I suggested he try the On Demand offerings on Channel 1, which worked!

My seatmate actually told me in flight that this was his first transcontinental upgrade on Delta as he usually flies other airlines as per his company travel budget and policy, so he was not familiar at all with the Delta 737-800 first class service and amenities, and that I steered him correctly on the power outlets under the center console, the choice of the short ribs for dinner, and the music on Channel 1. I think he was surprised I knew so much! Being a travel geek does have its advantages!

The rest of the in-flight service consisted of the standard Delta snack basket and full beverage service. The one disappointment was the margarita I ordered. What happened? The mixer for this one was the same as the Sky Club and it was not very good, so I asked the flight attendant to take it away and bring me an Amstel Light. We landed at 6:46 pm, nine minutes late.
